Backing up to tape is a key component of a complete storage strategy. Tape drives can be used for creating daily and weekly backups and tape allows customers to remove information off-site. Tape can be used for archival purposes to retain data for up to 30 years. The new HP StorageWorks DLT VS160 Tape Drive provides 160 GB capacity and 16 MB/s performance compressed. This is double the capacity and performance of the DLT VS80, reducing the overall cost of ownership. Increased capacity in a single tape drive, reduced number of cartridges needed to store the same amount of information and less downtime needed for back-ups. The DLT VS160 is a half-height drive based on the industry standard DLTtape technology. Customers who have outgrown previous generation DLT drives will get increased capacity and performance and backward-read compatibility with the DLT VS80 formatted media. The DLT VS160 media can be read by the SDLT 600 providing a long-term upgrade solution when customers outgrow the DLT VS160.

Tricky one this: The DLT-VS160 is manufactured by Misumi, Taiwan. Apart from being an HP product, it's definitely also sold by Tandberg Data, and I know this because I've sent 3 back to Tandberg over the last 10 months. Looking at the photos of competitor drives, it also seems to be sold by at least one other well-know drives company. All of which is very confusing for consumers. The HP version should hopefully be the one that includes excellent customer support (unlike Tandberg). Installation onto our server running on Windows 2003 Server was glitch-free, but I cannot vouch for the bundled 60-day trial version of HP's own back up software, as we use Yosemite Tapeware 8.1. As for the faulty Tandberg versions; all suffered the same problem of the tape failing to eject. I suspect that this may have benn due to high temperatures inside our server cabinet, a we have recently suffered temperature related hard-drive failures as well as the tape drive problem. I'll update this review in a couple of weeks.
