The Pantone Huey is a simple means of automatically adjusting the colour properties of your display, be it CRT or LCD. The process involves plugging the unit, about the size of a felt tip pen, into an USB port, placing it against your display and running the supplied software. This then cycles a test pattern through a range of colours and grey shades with the unit measuring the colour as shown on your screen. The software then calculates a colour profile to compensate for any errors and loads it as the working colour profile into your operating system.
The process takes a couple of minutes and results in a perfectly adjusted colour balance, essential if you do any kind of photo editing or web design.
The Huey can also measure ambient light levels and automatically tweak the display contrast so that the perceived colours remain the same as the ambient light changes. For this the unit must of course be left connected, otherwise it can be unplugged after calibration or moved to another machine.
Overall the Huey worked perfectly and the procedure was quite idiot-proof. At this price it is something you should not do without.
